When Google faces a choice, clicks decide.  User patterns create data to guide decisions.  David Plouffe of Obama's campaign discusses how people talking to people and technology combined to generate the strategic data used to steer decisions.  Throughout the campaign, they knew where they stood because of data feedback, not press or polls.  In the press, Six Sigma got a lot of praise for GE's turnaround under Jack, but as other companies rolled out Six Sigma and experienced mixed results, it became obvious that something was missing.  That missing nugget was the personality of Jack who drove decisions based on data.  There might be lies, darn lies and statistics, but facts are truth.


Without a conscious commitment to facts, decisions are more often made by the stronger forces of human nature.  We figure the person closest to the job, deemed the expert, must have the best idea.  If not, maybe it's the person with the biggest title, longest history or most compelling pitch.  Maybe, the fact that a decision was even being made was not brought to light, just like those many times when we drive to work and forget how we got there.  For many reasons, humans are not factual decision makers as a whole.


Factual decisions matter more than ever.  As the rate of change increases, the old playbooks of the past are irrelevant.  Competition and category killers require that the best decisions are made routinely.  Culling facts from the vast amounts of available information is a growing need as the barriers to sharing information are eliminated.  Journalists, publishers and other experts who would fulfill a role in maintaining a level of quality are no longer gatekeepers of information.
